If you're like me, you want to keep that as low as possible.

Here's my top five energy saving tips that will help keep more cash in your pocketbook, and less going to the power company.

1.  I'm going to mention this tip first, because it's often mistakenly thought that turning your thermostat down less than 10° for a few hours will take more heat to warm your home up when you turn it back higher.  This isn't true.  You'll actually save money because your heater won't be trying to keep your house so warm.  So here's the number one tip.

Turn down your thermostat five to 10° at night when you go to bed.  Turn the heat back up in the morning when you start your day.

2.  Install a programmable setback thermostat.  For those of you that use gas and oil to heat your homes, these little units are great at helping to save energy!  Let's face it, you're probably not going to take the time to follow tip number one day after day.  By installing a setback thermostat, you avoid the hassle of having to manually adjust your thermostat during those small incremental temperature changes.

3.  If you use electricity to heat, turn off the thermostats in the individual rooms that you are not using, and use oil filled radiator heaters in the rooms you're in the most.  Oil radiator heaters use less energy than electric baseboard heating.  By using an oil filled radiator heater in your bedroom and TV room, you'll save money and stay warm at the same time.

4.  55° is a good setting for your home when you'll be away for the weekend, or just a few days.  Setting your thermostat at 55° will help you save on energy, but won't freeze up your pipes.

5.  Turn your thermostat down in the spring when you open up your windows and doors more.  The cooler breezes that come through sure feel good, but you'll pay for it if you don't adjust your thermostat.

Follow these five heat saving energy tips, and you'll stay warm and toasty without breaking the budget.
